College of Humanities and Social Sciences Curriculum Committee

Procedures:

Membership

Each department in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences will choose one representative to serve on the college curriculum committee for the academic year. The membership of the HSS committee is comprised of chairs of department curriculum committees. A department may also elect an alternate to represent the department at some meetings. The chair of the college committee shall be elected from the membership. The associate dean for curriculum will serve in an advisory, non-voting, capacity.

Procedures

  1. To enact business, a quorum of the membership must be available to vote.
  2. A simple majority approves each proposal.
  3. Curriculum proposals must go through the following steps before being sent to the college committee for consideration:
    1. The department curriculum committee must approve the proposal, with a signature from the committee chair.
    2. The department chair must sign the proposal, indicating approval.
    3. Ideally, each proposal should go through the department curriculum committee chair to the college curriculum committee chair to minimize confusion.
  4. Each curriculum proposal should be sent electronically as a word document to the college curriculum committee chair (at hsscc@kennesaw.edu) at least one week prior to appearing on the agenda. The proposal is posted electronically for review by committee members. The syllabus and course proposal form must be submitted as a single document. Please label your electronic file appropriately with a heading that denotes the appropriate department or program. Save your file with the course designation first, followed by description of the proposal (new course and syllabus; new course proposal Gen Ed and syllabus; change in existing course; minor proposal; change in program/major; or graduate degree proposal). For example:

    Criminal Justice

CRJU 7722 New Course Proposal Form
    CRJU 7722 Signature Page
  5. Each proposal is presented for two readings. First reading may be waived only in unusual circumstances and only when approved by the college committee. Any revisions requested at first reading should be made one week prior to the second reading. The submission of the revised documents should be done following the guidelines in section 4 above. Files should be named as follows:

    Criminal Justice

CRJU 7722 New Course Proposal Form-REVISED
    CRJU 7722 Signature Page-REVISED
The submitting author of the proposal should be present to answer questions whenever the proposal is on the college curriculum committee agenda. Deliberation format will be (1) presentation of proposal, (2) discussion, (3) floor open for motions, and (4) approval of motions requires a simple majority of voting members.

  6. The corrected copy of the curriculum proposal and signature page should be presented to the chair after second reading for a signature. After passage of the proposal, the author of the proposal will forward the proposal package to the Dean for review. The author of the proposal will be notified by e-mail by the Dean's Office when the signed copy is ready for pick up. If approved by the Dean, the author of the proposal will forward the proposal electronically to the UPCC, GPCC, and/or the General Education Council for consideration. (Send your proposals to the UPCC chair at upcc@kennesaw.edu, for example.)
  7. The CHSS curriculum committee will follow the calendar process and deadlines established by UPCC for each academic year. The college committee usually will meet on alternate weeks as UPCC to allow departments to move their proposals forward as expeditiously as possible.

Typically UPCC sets the first meeting in October as the last date for first reading of any proposals that will affect the spring catalog update. Therefore, proposals for the spring catalog update must be received by UPCC no later than mid-to-late September. The first meeting in March is typically the last date for first reading of any proposals that will affect the fall catalog update. Therefore, proposals for the fall catalog update must be received by UPCC no later than mid-to-late February. Check the UPCC web site for dates for the current academic year.
